An expansion is an extra drawer, not the cabinet. If one lapses, the drawer does not disappear and nothing inside it is deleted — you get a long window to move its contents out at no charge, unpin what you no longer need, or start the drawer up again. While it lasts, the extra space is readable but frozen: you can take things out, you cannot put more in. The freeze is the whole arrangement — you are never billed for a drawer you stopped paying for, and a frozen drawer cannot quietly become permanent free storage either.
You always know what has to move. Snapshots living in an expansion are marked in a different colour in the app, because your yearly space fills first and only the overflow sits in the drawer. Free up room in the base — unpin something old, or download it and remove it — and a marked snapshot drops back into the base on its own. Unpinning always offers the file back first, so nothing has to be lost to make space.
When the window closes, the drawer is emptied. Whatever is still sitting in the expansion at that point is deleted permanently — that is the deal that keeps the move-out window free. The app marks exactly which snapshots are affected and counts down the date, so nothing about it is a surprise.
Either way your yearly plan keeps protecting everything inside your base size — an expansion lapsing never touches the base or starts the account-wide deletion countdown. Only the yearly plan lapsing does that.
When you approach the ceiling, Aerenium tells you. You will see a warning in the app once storage passes 85 percent, with the option to unpin snapshots you no longer need, download some to keep locally, or add an expansion. Backups stop cleanly at the limit — nothing is deleted to make room, and you are never billed for going over. Sizes are hard storage limits rather than a promised number of snapshots.
Written out plainly, because finding out later is how people lose things that mattered.
Your local copy is never affected by any of this — Aerenium keeps working on your machine whether you pay us or not. The thirty-day window and the deletion that follows apply only to the copy stored with us, and are set out in the Terms of Service.
